A True Legend in Morris Dancing Circles
“Peter Boyce came to Chingford County High School in 1961 and was my Biology Teacher. He started the school Morris side that became the adult Chingford Morris Men which eventually split ,and some of us started Albion Morris ( Morris On etc ) with the Albion Country Band. Before he came to Chingford he was teaching at Weston Grammar School where he started the Boys side which Mike Ashton joined. Peter was a founding Member of Mendip , West Somerset and the Bristol University side. He was all round Mr Folk , we did rapper , clog and singing as well as Morris . Peter also ran a Country dance band ( Ace fiddler ) at the same time ! Teaching always seemed to be his part time job. When he retired he was running three bands ( one of which was for Scottish Dances ). I last Zoomed him on his 90th Birthday when he was still fiddling! He was a complete one off , and always a bit of a nutter , but he has inspired generations of us . They don’t make them like that anymore. R.I.P“
Quote from Dr Paul Wilson, Chalice Morris Men:
As can be seen by the above quote from Paul Wilson of Chalice Morris and Morris Minor, Peter was an enormous influence on many people in not just Morris Dancing, but the folk music world. One could easily cut and paste from the information and memories many people have sent me and copy them here but it is better to read the documents completely and understand the large input Peter had in his lifetime on many others to carry on his mantle. To this end I have linked various documents which I received from Geoff Hughes, Chingford Morris Men, (including pages from the Old Chingfordians Magazine). My thanks go to all for their assistance. It must not be forgotten that Peter also had strong connections with the Legendary Upton-on-Severn Stick Dance (The Original Chingford Stick Dance ) , and his own missive on its origins is well worth the time to read, which shows his warmth and humour to great advantage. Links to these documents are below. “A picture is worth a thousand words” and the following gallery hopefully shows this.
From Chingford Morris came a group of dancers who were later to accompany Ashley Hutchings and Friends, including a young John Watcham, as The Albion Morris Men. More information can be found on these two links:
